Huntington tips off district with win

Huntington's boys and girls basketball teams tipped off district play with wins as the Hounds and Lady Hounds swept Franklin Academy Monday in Ferriday.

A familiar face was on the sidelines for the Huntington teams as David Boydstun returned to the bench after Nicky Pere´ resigned as boys and girls coach for personal reasons.

"I was sitting around enjoying being at home when I got the call," said Boydstun, who coached the Huntington boys the past two years. "They asked for some help, so I'm happy to oblige. It's a tough week with distractions and finals going on. I just want to help the kids and I hate how this all came about, but I just want both teams to be as successful as they can be. "

They were certainly that Monday night as in the boys contest, the Hounds kept Franklin from scoring for seven minutes in taking a 9-2 lead.

Huntington led 19-12 at halftime before extending that lead to 35-20 after three quarters.

"We jumped out and then both of us kind of just sat there for three or four minutes before we finally broke through," Boydstun said.

Jeremy Randall led all scorers with 20 points for the Hounds, while teammate Phillip Washington added eight.

"They were running the same thing we were running last year, so it hasn't been that big of an adjustment," Boydstun said.

Seth Henderson led Franklin Academy with 10 points.

The Lady Hounds led 8-4 after one period and 23-9 at halftime. Both teams scored 10 points in the third.

"We are going to keep running what they are running because that's what they are used to," Boydstun said. "The girls shot the ball well and plyed good defense."

Abi Brown led the Lady Hounds with 17 points while Julia Corbett added eight. Katy Little led Franklin with 15 points.

Huntington travels to Wilkinson County Christian Academy Friday for another key district contest.
