LifeShare Blood Centers invites area citizens to "Commit to Life" by scheduling an additional blood donation between December 20, 2008 and January 9, 2009.

Approximately 10,000 blood donors are needed during this time to ensure an adequate blood supply for local patients in area hospitals throughout the same period.

"Commit to Life is the time of year that we urge our community to step up and give blood just one more time," said Debra Ainsworth of Lifeshare. "Think of the child, the grandmother, the father, the friend all the everyday people who need blood right now. They all need everyday heroes. They need people like you and me to commit to life."

According to the 2007 Nationwide Blood Collection and Utilization Survey Report, 98.7% of transfused blood comes from blood donated by volunteers not giving the blood for a specific patient or for themselves.

Potential donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well and healthy at the time of donation, and eat a well-balanced meal with increased fluid intake prior to donation, know the names and doses of any medications taken, and the reasons for taking the medications. Identification must be presented at the time of donation.

You can donate blood at any of the following locations on the dates and times listed:

12/23/08: Ford's Food, Jonesville, 12-6 p.m.

12/26/08: Freds Ferriday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

1/2/09: Ford's Food, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

1/5/09: Concordia Electric 7:30-11:30 a.m.

For more information, call Debra Ainsworth at 318-445-7439.
