Christmas Message: Give the gift of forgiveness By Dusty Carson
Pastor of Youth
First Baptist Vidalia
Well you know it's that time of year. You see the seasonal items in the aisle of Wal-Mart. Houses are lit up like Vegas, and your neighbors have those outrageous decorations in their yards that could be spotted from outer space. It's Christmas time. Some people love it. Some tolerate it, and some don't care for it. One thing we can agree on is it comes quicker and quicker each year.
All of us wish we could rewind the hands of time and go back and re-live some of those days. Maybe for you it was a simpler time. I know for me, it sure was: no bills, no concern for the future, and no thought of what the next day would bring. You just took one day at a time. I believe with all my heart if we could go back in time, we would undo some things we did, and would right some wrongs.
Since it is impossible to go back in time, the biggest gift we have that some people never use is forgiveness.
UNforgiveness is like a cancer that is fatal to the soul; it will eat you up from the inside. Maybe this Christmas since you can't undo certain events or right some wrongs, maybe you need to forgive that person that you feel like you just can't forgive. When we don't forgive people, we feel like we have power over them. The truth is, when we choose to forgive we are truly set free from the pain and hurt. In some cases the person who has hurt you might not be around to accept your forgiveness or even want it. It's still alright to forgive them and choose to live a life of freedom.
Maybe you need to accept God's ultimate gift of forgiveness. We all have sin in our lives. We all have done wrong, whether it is lying, cursing or gossiping. You name it. We have all done it.
God is holy and He can not have fellowship with sin. Here is the great thing; when Jesus came that first Christmas it was for us. Jesus was a sacrifice for our sins. When Jesus died on the cross, He died for the sins of the world. Jesus paid for our sins.
The Bible says if we ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins, and ask Him to be our Lord and Savior, he will forgive us of all the sins we have committed and will take us to heaven when we die. Those who never accept Christ's forgiveness of their sins have to pay for their sins themselves in a place called Hell for eternity. Once we ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins the Bible says that you are saved forever. Maybe this holiday season you need to give the gift of forgiveness or embrace the forgiveness of Jesus |
