Story Archives: Cable One dropping area TV stations

Cable One dropping area TV stations

Some Cable One subscribers in Vidalia will be looking for different sources for local news, sports and weather at the beginning of the year as the cable company is dropping WBRZ (Ch. 2), KARD (Ch. 3) and KALB (Ch. 5).

"We've received a lot of phone calls critical of this announcement and we are going to meet with them to discuss some issues," said Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland.

According to its Web site, "Effective January 1, 2009, we (Cable One) will no longer carry the following stations: WBRZ - ABC (channel 2), KARD - ABC (channel 3), KALB - NBC (channel 5) and KNOE - CBS (channel 8). We will continue to carry WLBT - NBC (channel 6), WJTV - CBS (channel 12) and WAPT - ABC (channel 11) and so customers will still be able to see all major broadcast primetime programming."

The announcement continued: "The ABC, CBS and the NBC channels are duplicates stations. There are a couple reasons for these changes; the most important is signal strength. These stations have always been difficult to receive and had poorer picture quality. That's because they are transmitted a good distance from the Natchez area."

Broadcasters are required by law to convert their channels to digital by February 17, 2009.

"With digital signals there is no room for a marginal signal," states the Web site. "If there is any problem with the digital signal the picture will go dark. Unfortunately, after the transition, it will be nearly impossible for us to reliably receive these channels. A benefit of this channel change is the expansion our high-definition programming line-up in 2009.

In Natchez WBRZ, KLAX, KALB and KNOE will no longer be broadcast.

Bobby McCool of Cable One did not return calls to The Sentinel made Monday and Tuesday.
