Vidalia boys, Ferriday girls win C.B. Coney Make it a clean sweep for Vidalia's boys and Ferriday's girls in area tournaments as the Vikings and Lady Trojans closed out the year with championships at the C.B. Coney Memorial in Sicily Island.
Vidalia's boys defeated hosts Sicily Island 84-46 in the championship game.
Vidalia led 14-9 after one period and picked up the tempo thereafter, outscoring the Tigers 19-7 in the second period and 51-30 in the second half.
"Each quarter was progressively better and that's what we've been looking for," said Vidalia coach Robert Sanders.
Quartrell Thomas led Vidalia with 18 points, followed closely by Gary Stewart with 17, Torrey Dixon with 15, Louis Whitley with 12 and Jacob McGraw with 10.
"More balanced scoring is something else we've been looking for," Sanders said.
Karlos Gary led Sicily Island with 23.
The Lady Trojans defeated Block 65-39 for the championship.
Ferriday led 24-22 after one period before outscoring the Lady Bears 18-5 in the second quarter and 13-9 in the third period.
"The girls played good defense which is what I have been wanting to see all along," said Ferriday coach Lisa Abron. "The girls are communicating, blocking out, running the fast break and forcing a lot of turnovers."
Jasmine Upchurch led Ferriday with 14 points, while Jalessia Davis added 15, Atasia Banks 14 and Chante Polole 11.
"Anytime everybody is part of the scoring like that, it's a plus for us," Abron said.
On December 30, Vidalia's boys advanced to the finals with a 75-69 win over Franklin Parish.
Vidalia led 19-12 after one period and 40-36 at halftime.
Franklin Parish closed to within 54-53 after three periods, but Vidalia maintained the lead throughout the final quarter.
Torrey Dixon led Vidalia with 26 points, while Gary Stewart added 24. Quartrell Thomas chipped in 15.
Ferriday's girls advanced to the finals with an easy 62-29 win over Tensas Parish.
Ferriday led 8-7 after one period, but the Lady Trojans got some breathing room in the second period, outscoring the Lady Panthers 19-7.
Ferriday blew the game out in the third period, outscoring Tensas 19-6.
Atasia Banks led Ferriday with 19 points, while twin towers Jalessia Davis added 18 and Jasmine Upchurch 12. |
