2009 Heisman race familiar
Look who's back.
Who would have figured Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow would all be back for 2009?
I believe Tebow was a slam dunk. Why go to the NFL and sit on somebody's bench for a year when you can break record after record and put your name among the greatest ever to play at the collegiate level by returning to a Florida team that will be loaded for bear once again.
And it never has been about the money for Tebow.
If this guy was on Deal or No Deal he would probably take the first offer from the banker.
But money won't be a problem for this guy after 2009. If he does lead his team to another national championship and does win another Heisman he won't even have to go pro. He'll make enough off of endorsements and he could stay in the state of Florida (well, maybe not Miami or Tallahassee) and not have to pay for another thing in his life.
Colt McCoy was a maybe in my book, but after Oklahoma got the gold mine and Texas got the shaft, I think it swayed McCoy more to the staying side.
Maybe Will Muschamp can talk to Houston Nutt's folks about how to handle Texas Tech next year.
The biggest surprise of all came when Oklahoma's Sam Bradford announced he was staying.
Sure, he's only a sophomore, but Bradford had NFL written all over him.
Heck, Georgia's Matthew Stafford has to have the biggest grin around after deciding to leave Bulldog country early and not have to face McCoy, Tebow or Bradford at opposing tables on NFL Draft Day.
There will be no Brady Quinn moments for Stafford.
Make your reservation for Detroit, Mr. Stafford. Oh, and make sure you have some good insurance. They don't call it the black and blue division for name's sake.
Oh yeah, USC's Mark Sanchez also chose to leave. He played in the Pac 10. If that doesn' get you ready for the NFL, what does? OK, I know how the Pac 10 did in the bowl games. I also know who they did it against. Let's see, Oregon State 3-0 over Pittsburgh and Arizona 31-21 over BYU. Then there's Washington State losing to Hawaii.
In the SEC, Greg Hardy is returning to Ole Miss and if he doesn't pull a Ricky-Jean Francois and just go through the motions next year that will certainly help the Rebels even more.
Alabama lost tailback Glen Coffee, but the Tide backfield will still be stacked.
Getting closer to home, Ricky-Jean Francois opted to leave LSU early, while Brandon LaFell, Ciron Black and Charles Scott decided to stay.
LaFell did a sort of end run by changing his mind at the last minute. Maybe Russell Sheppard threw him a few passes when he arrived on campus earlier this month.
With the loss of Herman and Brent Helmes, Black's return is huge.
And Scott has the chance to shed a few pounds and pick up some speed and become an even better running back.
After three games last year, Tiger fans were yelling Scott for Heisman. After the next three or four contests they were just yelling. The ones hanging around until the end, that is.
Don't worry about the Heisman race next year. It's going to be a repeat of last year.
