Vidalia tips off district with win over Bunkie So much for getting rusty from a two-week layoff.
The Vidalia boys basketball team, having been without a game for two weeks while the girls were beginning District 2-2A play, opened district play with an impressive 74-49 win over Bunkie at Bunkie Tuesday.
"I think they got tired of beating each other up and were glad to see someone with a different color uniform," said Vidalia coach Robert Sanders, whose team lost by one point at Bunkie last year.
Vidalia jumped out to a 24-4 lead in the first quarter as Quartrell Thomas and Gary Stewart hit 3-point shots, including one by Thomas from near halfcourt at the buzzer.
Vidalia led 39-23 at halftime.
The Vikings outscored the Panthers 35-26 in the second half.
Torrey Dixon led Vidalia with 21 points, while Quartrell Thomas added 18 and Gary Stewart 16.
"It's big anytime you can get a district win on the road," Sanders said. "But we're not about to take another two weeks off from playing. We just have to stay focused."
Vidalia girls fell to Bunkie, 43-28. Bunkie led 19-2 after one period of play and 23-12 at halftime.
Gabrielle Wagoner led Vidalia with 12 points, while Dejanae Harris added 10. Vidalia's girls fell to Buckeye 44-31 Friday.
Vidalia hosts Avoyelles Friday and Bolton on Tuesday. |
