The Vidalia Chamber of Commerce handed out its 2008 awards Thursday at the Bryant O. Hammett Conference and Convention Center.

Joey Martin of the Concordia Sentinel was named Vidalian of the Year.

"I am very honored and appreciative of this award," Martin said. "Vidalia is a wonderful place to grow up and raise a family. I am truly blessed to have so many great friends in the Miss-Lou area. And receiving this award from Mr. Percy Rountree makes the whole night even more special."

Rountree won the award in 2007.

Martin is involved in many civic activities and is president of the Vidalia Lion's Club. He and his wife, Kathy, and son, Jake, a senior at Vidalia High, attend First Baptist Church in Vidalia.

Vidalia High biology teacher Tim Herndon was recognized as Educator of the Year.

"A lot of people can't tell you who won the World Series, Super Bowl or Miss American, said Vidalia Junior High principal Whest Shirley. "But if you think back to high school and think of your favorite teacher or coach, those teachers come readily to mind."

Herndon moved to Vidalia 22 years ago.

"This is the longest time I've spent anywhere and this is home," Herndon said. "This is unbelievable. I am very appreciative and humbled to receive this."

Ryan Paul, who works as an engineer at BASF and manages a strip mall which includes his Afterglow tanning salon, was recognized as Business Person of the Year.

"I hope we can work and pull more youngsters from the colleges back," he said. "It's all about working together."

Local radio station KFNV-FM The River was named Bowie Business of the Year.

"We will continue to do everything we can to promote the community," Mike Smith said.

Comfort Inn and Suites was recognized with the Hospitality award, and Sales Manager Clara Nell Brown accepted the award for the company.

Clerk of Court and comedian/motivational speaker Clyde Ray Webber entertained the audience before the awards.
