Story Archives: Black River Bridge projects nearing completion

Black River Bridge projects nearing completion
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Demolition of the old Black River Bridge at Jonesville and the opening of four lanes on the new bridge will happen soon, according to District Engineer Administrator Ricky Moon of the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development, Chase District.

Moon said James Construction has been held up on the demolition of the old bridge due to the high stage of Black River.

"Once the river goes down some prepatory work will be done and the old bridge will be demolished," said Moon. He said Hwy. 84 traffic will be halted for a brief period for the work.

While the new bridge is presently opened to two-lane traffic, Moon said James Construction will soon be completing work to open the bridge to four lanes.

This is part of a $31.2 million approach project connecting the highway to the main bridge span which was constructed a few years ago.

"The project has been hampered by rainy and cool weather," said Moon. "One we get drier and warmer weather this will be completed."

He said "it's about two weeks worth of work."

Once these projects are completed, Moon said James Construction will begin the half-mile five-lane work from the new bridge to the traffic light at the triangle intersection near Little River.

This project will cost $5.8 million and should be completed in 225 working days, said Moon.

The remainder of Hwy. 84 from this point westward through town will be a three-lane highway, Moon said.

Meanwhile, work has begun on a concrete patch repair and joint sealing project on U.S. 84/425 from Airport Road near Vidalia to Ferriday.

Moon said Forby Contracting, Inc. is the contractor for the $730,000 project. Forby has 75 working days to finish the project but Moon said the contractor expects to complete the work in less than a month.
