Concordia's infrastructure improvements The Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development will soon demolish the old Black River Bridge at Jonesville and open the new bridge to four lanes. The new bridge at Black River marks the latest of several major improvements for Concordia's infrastructure that have been completed in the past two years.
Just 14 months ago, the four-laning project of Highway 15 (also known as U.S. Highway 425) was completed with the opening of the new Clayton bridge over the Tensas River. The four-laning of Highway 15 from Concordia through Richland Parish spanned 30 years and cost some $90 million. Now the parish has access to one four-lane highway system which connects the northern end of the state to the southern end.
While the traffic moving through Concordia Parish has increased due to the Highway 15 project, Vidalia officials say it also is one of the reasons that town is growing economically. More traffic, though not always good, can mean more business for retail outlets and more jobs for local residents.
Now the four-laning of Highway 84 from Ferriday to Jonesville becomes a priority for Concordia. Although this work may be years before it gets under way in earnest, the opening of four lanes on the new Black River Bridge in the weeks ahead is a sure sign the four-laning work of Highway 84 is next on the list of priorities.
More than $50 million has been invested in construction of the new Black River and Tensas River bridges. The old Black River Bridge at Jonesville was constructed in the 1930s.
While $50 million is a good bit of money, it represents a prudent and sound investment for Concordia Parish, which will pay dividends for the people of the region for years to come. |
