Monterey High's boys and girls teams tipped off District 3B with a pair of wins over Forest High Tuesday in Monterey.

Monterey's girls defeated Forest 36-24, holding the Lady Bulldogs to four points in the first quarter and two points in the final period.

The Lady Wolves led 8-4 as Brooke Baker and Kristen Lipsey scored four points each in the period.

Monterey increased its lead to 19-14 at halftime and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 17-10 in the second half.

Baker and Ellen Bairnsfather led the Lady Wolves with 10 points each.

"The girls really sold out on defense and did a great job," said Monterey girls coach Cary Shively. "You have to win your district games at home and this was a good win for us."

Monterey's boys defeated Forest, 65-61.

Forest led 16-8 after one period, but Josh Chapman scored 11 of his 23 points in the second period to pull the Wolves to within 30-27 at halftime.

Monterey took the lead in the third quarter, leading 45-41 going into the final quarter.

Austin Lipsey hit seven free throws and scored nine of his 11 points in the final period to seal the win.

Monterey visits Kilbourne Friday in another district contest.

The Wolves and Lady Wolves return home on Tuesday for contest with Epps. Monterey travels to Forest on Feb.6.
