State Rep. Andy Anders of Clayton attended the 8th Annual Legislative Ag Chairs Meeting in San Diego, Ca., Jan. 23-25.

Anders is chairman of Agriculture, Forestry, Aquaculture, and Rural Development.

The invitation only event is the premier opportunity for agriculture legislators from around the United States, Canada and Mexico to meet and discuss challenges and opportunities facing agriculture.

"It was a really good meeting and I met a lot of legislators from other states," Anders said. "We learned quite a bit about emissions control engines and I also learned that water in California is like oil in Louisiana. They have a lot of environmental laws when it comes to water over there."

Anders said there was one clear theme.

"Everybody's budget is tight," he said. "But we keep asking for help because they only way you are going to get anything is to try."

Attendees toured California avocado and flower farms, spent most of one day in workshops and got an overview of federal issues including the 2008 Farm Bill.

"We also got to see the fires out west and that is really remarkable," Anders said.

The meeting topics included Educating Consumers, Organic Farming, Family Farm Viability, Ag Competitiveness, Innovative Rural Health Care Options, Sustainable Biofuels and Immigration and Ag Labor.

"The National Ag Chairs summit is the most important meeting of the year for me," Anders said. "It is a unique opportunity to learn about ag issues in other parts of the country and hear from the top experts in the field. I know I will be able to put this information to good use for my constituents and my state."
