IN TODAY'S SENTINEL -- FEBRUARY 11, 2009 THREE FEARED DEAD AFTER BOATS CAPSIZE IN RIVER
One man is dead and two others feared dead after two commercial fishing boats loaded with shad and webbing sank Tuesday around 10:30 p.m. in the Mississippi River near the mouth of the Homochitto. One of the four men aboard the two boats made it safely to shore. All four are believed to be from Krotz Springs, located in St. Landry Parish on Hwy. 90 between Baton Rouge and Opelousas.
MAYORS PUSH LOCAL PROJECTS
Mayors Hyram Copeland of Vidalia and Glen McGlothin of Ferriday are continuing meetings with Congressional members in Washington, D.C., today (Wednesday) as they seek financial support for a number of local projects. They watched from the gallery as the U.S. Senate pass President Barrack Obama's $838 billion emergency economic stimulus package on Tuesday.
VIDALIA FIRE DEPARTMENT UPGRADES CONTINUE
To maintain the city's current insurance rating of 3, the Vidalia Town Council approved the hiring of three new firefighters Tuesday night at the regular meeting.
JURY EYES OLD COURTHOUSE ROOF, DOTY ROAD CENTER
The Concordia Parish Police Jury agreed Monday night to seek additional quotes for a new roof on the old courthouse in Vidalia and delayed action on whether to pull out of a lease on the Doty Road Center in Ferriday.
KEEPING STUDENTS SAFE A PRIORITY
Sheriff Randy Maxwell and School Supt. Loretta Blankenstein said work to insure that students are safe in schools across the parish remains a priority. |
