Monterey softball setting high goals Despite having no seniors, Monterey High softball coach Hazel Brallier will be fielding a veteran team on the diamond after losing only one senior.
"These girls have played together for a while now," Brallier said. "Our chemistry should be our strong point. The good thing is I don't have a spend a lot of time teaching with these girls. They are real hard workers."
Junior Holli Clay returns on the mound after striking out 66 last season. She also batted .344 and had a fielding percentage of .968.
Ellen Bairnsfather will also see time on the mound, along with seventh-graders Paige Bryan and Karlee Woodruff.
Sophomore Taylor Morace will be behind the plate after batting .324 last season.
At first pase is junior Ariel Hector.
Sophomore Kendall Lipsey will be at second base, while Bairnsfather and Clay will handle shortstop.
Bairnsfather hit .288 with an .852 fielding percentage at shortstop.
Eighth-grader Bailey New will be at third base.
Playing in the outfield will be sophomore Logan Dale, junior Brooke Baker, junior Lauren New, junior Alana Poole and junior Casey White.
Monterey lost out to No. 10 Runnels, 3-2, in a Class B first round contest last year.
"We're anxious to get started," Brallier said. "The girls are tired of practicing. We've got higher goals this year. We're still in a tough district, but we feel like we'll be competitive." |
