Huntington advances at South State
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Huntington advanced in the first round of South State Tuesday, defeating University Christian 53-37 on the Flames' home court Tuesday.

Huntington faces top-seeded Laurel Christian Thursday at 7:45 p.m. A win by the Hounds would qualify them for the state tournament.

Huntington finished second in the District 6A Tournament at Huntington last week.

Hound head coach David Boydstun has been battling the flu this week.

"I told the guys to stay away from me," Boydstun said. "Fortunately, none of them have it."

Boydstun led the Hounds to the state championship game two years ago.

"Last year we didn't get out of district, but our seniors were sitting on the bench two years ago," Boydstun said.

The Hounds were sluggish on the offensive end of the court in the first quarter and trailed 12-9 at the end of the quarter.

But Huntington outscored the Flames 17-9 in the second period and 27-16 in the second half.

"We showed a little of a half-court trap in the first half and got in it pretty good in the second half and it was effective," Boydstun said.

Jeremy Randall led the Hounds with 19 points. Tyler Pere´ added nine.

In girls action, Tensas defeated Central Hinds 48-22, outscoring CH 15-0 in the first quarter.

Jordan Leake netted 10 for the Lady Chiefs.

Tensas faces top-seeded Newton today (Wednesday) at 6:30 p.m.
