Archaeologists meet, tour mound sites

Native American archaeology was at center stage this weekend when Louisiana and Mississippi archaeologists, with guests from other states, held their 2009 Joint Annual Meeting at the Natchez Eola Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The event was sponsored by the Mississippi Archaeological Association and the Louisiana Archaeological Society.

The three-day program included a banquet Friday night and a day-long program Saturday with updates on various archaeologist projects in the region.

The highlight of the weekend was a mound tour led by Smokey Joe Frank and Sam Brookes on Sunday.

Archaeologists and other attendees visited the site of Fort Rosalie, sites of Tioux Indian settlements in the area of Government Fleet Road, the White Earth Concession along St. Catherine Creek near the old International Paper Company plant and French concessions along Hwy. 61 South near St. Catherine.

Grand Village was also visited where Jim Barnett discussed the Natchez Indians. Barnett is Director, Division of Historic Properties, Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

The site of an extended Natchez Indian village along Perkins Creek on the Natchez Trace was also a stopping point.

Archaeologists also visited the 1,000-year-old Feltus Mounds site in Jefferson County, which is located on private property.
