Traylor to retire from Supreme Court
State Supreme Court Justice Chet Traylor of Winnsboro says he will retire from the bench effective May 31.
Upon retirement, Traylor, 63, will pursue legal opportunities in private practice.
"I am very proud and honored that the people of the 4th District of the Supreme Court allowed me to serve as long as they did," Traylor told the Concordia Sentinel Monday afternoon.
"I've been very fortunate," Traylor said. "I've been allowed to serve the people at the highest level of our judicial system in Louisiana."
"I think I've done a fairly good job," Traylor continued. "I can say without equivocation that I've given it my best."
Traylor did not elaborate on what areas of law he would practice once he retires from the bench.
"I have some opportunities in front of me that I feel I need to pursue," Traylor said.
A special election will be held in October to fill Traylor's seat on the bench. A run-off election, if needed, will take place in November.
Ouachita Parish Sheriff Royce Toney described Traylor as pro-law enforcement jurist.
"Judge Traylor has always been a friend of law enforcement, and I will miss him badly in serving as our Supreme Court justice," Toney said. "I think so much of him that I asked him to swear me into office as sheriff, and he graciously agreed to do it."
As word spread over the weekend that Traylor was poised to announce his retirement, the name of one district court judge in northeast Louisiana was mentioned repeatedly as a potential candidate to succeed Traylor. That man is 4th Judicial District Court Judge Marcus Clark of West Monroe. Judges John Larry Lolley and Milton Moore of the Second Circuit Court of Appeal were mentioned as possible candidates, too. Lolley and Moore are from Monroe.
A native of Caldwell Parish, Traylor was elected to the Supreme Court in 1996. Prior to his election to the state's highest court, Traylor served as a district court judge in the 5th Judicial District of Franklin, Richland and West Carroll parishes. He served in that capacity, beginning in 1985, until his election to the Supreme Court.
Prior to his election to the District Court bench, Traylor worked as an assistant district attorney in the 5th Judicial District from 1975-1982.
Traylor's past work experience also includes a stint with Louisiana State Police as a trooper. He was assigned to Troop F while he attended then-Northeast Louisiana University where he earned a degree in government in 1969. Traylor earned his law degree from Loyola in New Orleans in 1974.
Besides work at Louisiana State Police, Traylor also was an investigator for the Louisiana Department of Justice Organized Crime and Racketeering Unit. Later, he was a legal adviser to the Louisiana State Police Narcotics, Detectives and Intelligence units.
Traylor served in the U.S. Army, too. In the Army, Traylor worked as military police officer. He entered the Army as a private and two years later he was honorably discharged as Sergeant E-5.
In Franklin Parish, Traylor was a founding board member of the Winnsboro Economic Development Foundation and served as a board member of the Winnsboro's Lions Club. He was a member of the Franklin Parish Mental Health Association as well.
Traylor was the first president of Winnsboro's Ducks Unlimited chapter and the founder of John Adams Chapter of Greenwings. He is a life member of the National Rifle Association and is a member of the Rocky Mountain Conservation Fund. |
