Vikings advance past Patterson Vidalia High coach Robert Sanders took his team down to the Lafayette Cajundome a day before their semifinal contest against Patterson so his team could get a feel of the atmosphere.
Junior guard Quartrell Thomas got a good feel apparently. Thomas hit 6-of-7 shots from 3-point land and 7-of-11 overall to lead the second-seeded Vikings to a 66-55 win over No. 3 Patterson to advance to the Class 3A state championship game.
"Quartrell did an outstanding job," Sanders said. "They were playing zone and let him shoot from the outside and he took advantage."
The Vikings shot 55 percent from the floor against the physical Lumberjacks, who led 19-15 with six minutes left until intermission when Vidalia exploded for a 14-0 run to grab a 29-19 lead.
Patterson outrebounded Vidalia 42-28, but Viking junior Gary Stewart added eight boards to his 16 points, five assists and three steals.
Thomas led Vidalia with 22 points.
Torrey Dixon and Rolandin Webster had 11 points each.
Patterson (25-5) was led by Landon Lightfoot with 13 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Kenny Hilliard finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Hilliard is the nephew of former Patterson, LSU and New Orleans Saints great Dalton Hilliard. |
