Monterey teams win softball tournament

Monterey High's Lady Wolves and junior high softball team won their respective pools in the Grace Christian Tournament Saturday at Alexandria Saturday.

Monterey fell to Bolton in its only loss, 3-1.

The Lady Wolves rebounded with a 4-3 win over Franklin County in Meadville, Ms.

Monterey, 10-8, defeated Maruepas 6-5 before blanking Georgetown 8-0.

Holli Clay returned to the mound for the final game after missing several games because of an arm injury, allowing Ellen Bairnsfather to move from the mound back to shortstop.

"It was a very good weekend for both our teams," said Monterey coach Hazel Brallier. "We had to come from behind in some of those games, but the girls did a good job of staying focused. We got the hits when we needed them, as well as bunts to move runners around."

The junior high Lady Wolves defeated Maurepas, Georgetown and Dotson.

The Lady Wolves fell to St. Joseph 6-2 on Thursday.

Brooke Baker singled twice, while Ariel Hector doubled and Logan Dale, Karlee Woodruff, Casey White and Ellen Bairnsfather each singled.
