Vidalia gets first district win
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vidalia High baseball coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir can't remember the last time Vidalia started off district play 0-2.

The Vikings had to fight and scrap to keep that from happening this season as Vidaila defeated Buckeye 6-5 Monday at Vidalia to improve to 1-1 in District 3-3A play.

Vidalia dropped its district opener to Bunkie last week.

"That was a big win for us," Hoffpauir said. "You have to win your home games and we didn't do that last week. We have to play our best game to have a chance to win."

Seth Thompson started for the Vikings with Trey Lillie and Mason Ozburn also seeing time on the mound.

Vidaila scored two runs in the third inning to tie the game at 3-3 and added two in the sixth to go up 6-4.

Ben Parnham reached in the sixth on a bases on balls and moved to second on a bunt single by Caleb Vines. Ozburn reached on a fielder's choice and Thompson was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Jake DeWeese delivered a single up and the middle and John Brixey hit a sacrifice fly to put the Vikings up by two runs.

Buckeye scored a run and had runners on second and third with two outs. Hoffpauir intentionally walked Jacob Carter to load the bases.

"He was their No. 3 hitter and had a good hit on the night where their No. 4 hitter had not done much," Hoffpauir said. "But we wanted to get into a force situation at each base anyway."

Adam Foster struck out, but ran to first even though it was occupied. Catcher Caleb Vines, who replaced Seth Barlow who suffered a cracked collarbone in the game, started to go to throw to first, but ran to the plate when Greg Nall broke for home and tagged him out to end the game.

"That was chaotic," Hoffpauir said. "But we re-grouped before they did."

Thompson went 2-for-3 at the plate, with a double and two RBI.

Vidalia plays at Bolton Frida before returning home Monday against Avoyelles. in a pair of district games.
