Griffin to perform at library April 16
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Concordia Parish Library at the Concordia Bank Lobby in Vidalia on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 7 p.m. for an evening to remember with the spotlight on soul, gospel, and blues.

Mary Griffin, hailing from Houston, Texas, will bring her unique vocal styling to Vidalia with Rod Payne accompanying on the piano. Rod is a returning all time favorite of Concordia Parish.

Mary Griffin was raised in the deep southern bayous of Louisiana and first heard melodies that were both enchanting and inspiring in her father's small country church, but it was the steamy rhythm and blues along with soul music that she imitated. Through this, she picked up the soulfulness of the gospel, and the edginess of blues that give her local fame in Louisiana.

Her voice opened the doors of education in her favor and she attending Grambling University. After obtaining a degree in Performance on full music scholarship, she moved to New Orleans to pursue her career as a solo artist. Shortly after moving to New Orleans, she began accepting offers from various production companies to record music for upcoming films.

She received a phone call from Patti Labelle inquiring about her availability as a background vocalist and she began touring with her. With these new developments, Griffin's status as an artist heightened, and she had the opportunity to share the stage with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, and Christina Aguilera.

She is now a performing artist from Houston and is a regular entertainer at the Red Cat Jazz Café. Mary says, "We all have a purpose in life, we just have to walk in it," and that is exactly what she does.

This performance is free and open to the public. This is made possible by the funding from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, The Decentralized Arts Fund of the State of Louisiana, and supported by a grant administered by The Arts Council of Central Louisiana.
