Longtime Alaska resident Jerry Paul Fuller died peacefully March 30, 2009, at home after a long courageous fight against cancer, holding one of her daughter's hands.

A memorial service was held at noon Saturday at Jewel Lake Parish, 3833 Strawberry Road. A celebration of life was held at the Fuller family residence following the service.

Jerry was born August 25, 1943, to Martha and Lloyd Paul in Ferriday. In 1968, after earning a degree in education/speech language at University of Louisiana at Lafayette, she packed up her belongings and hit the Alcan for Alaska. Her first job was with Alaska Crippled Children. After two years, she was hired by the Anchorage School District for 24 years, working primarily with deaf children. She retired in 1994 and worked on contract as a speech/language specialist in rural villages of Alaska for SERRC - Alaska's Educational Resource Center.

She enjoyed berry picking, reading and spending time with friends and family at her cabin in Seward. Her family said: "To know her was to love her, and friends and family reading this will know exactly what that means. She was one of the kindest, most loving mothers, sister and friend whose smile and laughter would fill a room. She will forever be loved, missed and never forgotten by the people who knew her. We will keep her in our hearts as we remember a remarkable woman who made an everlasting imprint on the hearts that she has touched throughout her years."

Jerry was involved in community service since her arrival in Alaska. She served on the Alaska Council on Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Quota Club International, which is a group of professional women, and the Pathway Counseling Center. Recent community involvement was working with the Alaska Kairos Prison Ministry. Jerry was also active in her church.

She is survived by her daughters, Regina and Julie Hileman; son, Taylor Fuller; and grandson, Dustin Starkey, all of Anchorage; brother, Lloyd Paul and his wife Betty of Ferriday; nephews, Michael Guyer, Aaron and Ryan Paul and their wives and families of Colorado and Louisiana; and in-laws, Rick, Virginia, Carole and Danielle Fuller, and Lisa Stitt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Martha Paul; sister, Jan Fitzgerald; and husband, Kenneth Fuller.
