LSU ag official local cuts possible

John Russin, Associate Vice Chancellor & Associate Director of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, told the Ferriday Rotary Club that the LSU AgCenter will possibly lose parish offices if proposed budget cuts go through in June.

"Next year's reductions are currently estimated to be about 22 percent, in addition to the current fiscal year budget reduction of 4.4 percent," Russin said. "That would reduce funding of approximately 30 percent for research programs on significant commodities."

Russin said that would also eliminate 60 on-campus research programs, 15 field research programs, six field units, and three on-campus research units.

"This would also reduce funding of approximately 30 percent for extension educational programs on significant agricultural commodities, along with 4-H programs that serve over 240,000 youth and 52,000 4-H club members," Russin said. "And we will not be able to address critical environmental and regulatory issues and mediate agriculture and environmental conflicts."

The AgCenter representative also said that Concordia Parish County Agent Glen Daniels, who is also serving Catahoula Parish, may have to cover two more parishes, as well if the cuts go through.

Russin said the LSU AgCenter is like a college, except without the students.

"We do not receive tuition," Russin said. "You people are our students, and your services are free."

Russin said over the past decade, personnel lines have decreased by 300, a reduction in total workforce of over 20 percent.

"It's a very serious time," Russin said. "I encourage everyone to contact their legislators and the State Board of Regents to fully fund the LSU AgCenter because it is a vital and necessary service."
