Anders says legislative sesson 'battle of the money'

Rep. Andy Anders of Clayton says some lawmakers will attempt to raise Homestead Exemption in the upcoming session as financial matters dominate, while the LSU AgCenter is facing cutbacks.

"I don't think the Homestead Exemption issue is going to pass, but we're facing it," said Anders. "I'm certainly against it."

"It's going to be a battle of the money," he said. "There are some who are talking about raising Homestead Exemption to help offset financial losses. Some are proposing raising the exemption from $75,000 to $175,000."

The session begins April 27.

Anders, who chairs the House Agriculture Committee, has been discussing the budget shortfall with LSU AgCenter officials, Commissioner of Agriculture Mike Strain and others.

He said low oil prices and the repeal of the Stelly Tax has cost the state treasury.

"We're not really sure what the shortfall amount is," said Anders, but he believes LSU AgCenter faces major cuts.

"The AgCenter handles all of the research for farmers, handles 4-H, county agents and many agriculture programs that are important to rural communities like ours," said Anders. "I know commissioner Strain has scaled back some and he says he can't cut much more."
