Hound baseball ends year Huntington's baseball season came to an end Tuesday as the Hounds dropped two games at the District 6-A Tournament in Winnsboro Tuesday.
The tournament was scheduled to start Monday, but a thunderstorm just after 3 p.m. pushed the tournament back a day.
Thinking it would play its first game against Riverdale at 5 p.m., Franklin Academy head coach Ryan Ellington was told by the MPSA the tournament had to be completed by Tuesday, so Huntington was told Tuesday morning their first game would be just after noon.
"I think that hurt everybody," said Huntington coach Leo Eliser. "We had such quick notice and hustled to get there and we literally got off the bus and played. Unfortunately, we didn't show up for the first game."
The Hounds fell to Riverdale 12-0 as Huntington was held without a hit.
Meanwhile, Franklin, which finished undefeated in District 6A East, was upset by Glenbrook and faced Huntington in a game for third place.
The winner of the game would advance to the round robin tournament against District 4 and District 5 third place winners to see who advanced to South State.
Jordan Wilson pitched one of his best games of the season against the Cougars, but Huntington came up one run short, falling 4-3.
Wilson threw 61 pitches going into seventh innings.
Franklin won the game despite getting only one hit to Huntington's six.
The Hounds led 1-0 before Franklin used two sacrifice flies to take a 4-2 lead.
Huntington scored one in the seventh and left the bases loaded at the end of the game.
Phillip Washington and Tyler Peré both were 2-for-3 in the game and Peré had a triple in the losing effort.
"We accomplished something by getting there," Eliser said. "When you look at how we started and to come back and get into the tournament said a lot for these guys." |
