Vidalia softball gets first win It took longer than expected - litererally - but Vidalia High softball coach Graham Roberts picked up his first coaching win as the Lady Vikings defeated Marksville 5-0 Tuesday in a suspended game that was played before a second regulation game.
Vidalia led Marksville 5-0 in the fifth inning when rains stopped play in Marksville on March 26.
"It's an achievement," Roberts said. "At the beginning of the season we set a goal of winning as many games as possible. But we had only three starters back and went through a lot of adversity this season."
Roberts lost second baseman Caitlyn Hendricks, one of the fastest players on the team, to a fractured ankle in the fifth game when she broke it stepping on home plate.
"I hate to end this year with possibly one win (the Lady Vikings host Harrisonburg Thursday in their final game), but we knew what we were facing. A lot off these girls had never played fast-pitch before. I feel like we still have come a long way and I'm looking forward to next year."
Shelby Zimmerman kept the Lady Tigers from making a threat to earn the shutout win and give the Lady Vikings their first win in 17 games.
Marksville won the second game, 10-8.
"We hit the ball one-through-nine," Roberts said. "I would have loved to have won that second game, but I'm proud of the effort."
The contest against Harrisonburg is a non-district game and will serve as Senior Night for the Lady Vikings.
Marksville is now 7-16-1 overall and 2-8 in district.
Buckeye leads the district with a 10-0 record, while Bunkie is in second place at 8-2.
Avoyelles is 6-4, while Bolton finished district with a 3-7 record. |
