Alexander says Americans 'deserve better'

U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander told the Ferriday Rotary Thursday that Washington "is a pretty mean place to be" and that it is both confusing and frustrating for a country boy from Quitman.

"We are overtaxing people," Alexander said. "I will continue to do what I can. I have voted for tax cuts, voted against tax increases and voted against the federal budget."

Alexander said in 1950 less than 40 percent of the budget went to entitlement programs.

"Now we're running somewhere around 55 percent," he said. "And by the year 2020 it will be about 65 percent unless drastic measures are taken."

As for President Obama's budget, Alexander said it spends too much, taxes too much and borrows too much.

"Instead, the federal government needs to adopt a plan that will curb careless spending, create jobs, lower taxes and control debt," he said. "For months now, I have said that the American people deserve better. We cannot continue on this road of wasteful spending, saddling our children and our children's children with this immeasurable tab.

"Congress must go back to the fundamental principles, such as limited government and personal responsibility that made our nation strong. We need a recovery plan that serves the best interests of the American people. During this economic crisis, our hard-working citizens deserve responsible answers and a responsible budget."

Alexander said building a port in Vidalia would certainly help the local economy.

Alexander said approximately 45 percent of business in the United States is affected by the Mississippi River, but much of the land along the river is undeveloped.
