Rains, cold problem for parish farmers Rain and cold weather "have really played havoc on our planting," Concordia Parish County Agent Glen Daniels said Tuesday, noting that "in some ways it has been a nightmare."
"All of the rain and the 35 to 40-degree nighttime temperatures have been tough on crops," said Daniels. "We had to replant a lot of corn and will have to replant some soybeans."
Daniels said close to 100 percent of the corn crop had been planted and that 20 to 25 percent of the acreage will likely have to be replanted.
He said about 25 percent of the soybean acreage is planted but that up to a fourth of that may have to be replanted.
"We have some farmers who planted as much as 4,000 acres in soybeans," said Daniels. "Angelina planted about 1,200 acres and about 30 percent of that will have to be replanted."
He said most of the soybean acreage planted has been treated with systemic fungicide that prevent pythium and rhizoctonia, each a soil-born fungus that kills seed and plants.
The replanting efforts are costly, says Daniels, noting that a bag of untreated soybean seed cost $50 a bag, corn costs $200 and cotton $460.
"It's been an expensive start and due to the replanting our crops are delayed," said Daniel. "But with pretty, warm weather we could get a majority of the soybeans and cotton planted through next week. |
