Huntington to host South State tennis

Huntington School will host the MPSA Class A South State Tournament in Natchez Tuesday and next Wednesday.

The tournament will be at headquartered at Duncan Park with some of Tuesday's matches being played at Trinity, also. 

Huntington will be one of 15 teams competing for a chance to advance to the state tournament in Jackson.

Singles matches will begin Tuesday at 9 a.m., followed by doubles matches at 10:30 a.m.

Huntington enters the tournament with a 7-2-1 record.

"Our prospects are pretty good on the girls' side," said Huntington coach Emily Guida. "I expect the girls to compete well. I hope the boys will advance at least one round and could go further, depending on the draw. All of my players have improved a lot over the season."

"We will face some tough competition from eastern Mississippi, so there will be some unknowns at the tournament."

Huntington defeated Tallulah 4-2 on Thursday.

Emilee Johns of Huntington defeated Ainslee Oliver 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 girls singles.

Sarah Hoover and Juila Corbett of Huntington outlasted Emory Dukes and Haley Nettles 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 in No. 1 girls doubles.

Huntington's Abbey Ashmore and Allie Boothe blanked Olivia Peacock and Chelsea Grimes 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 girls doubles.

In No. 1 boys singles, Colby Gray of Huntington defeated Kyle Ersvin 6-2, 6-2.

Huntington's No. 1 boys doubles team of Anthony Olds and Cody Dye fell to Cody Munn and J.R. Fortenberry 6-4, 3-6, 10-3.

Adalyn Boyd of Huntington lost to Chelsea Keene 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 girls singles.

The Hounds also posted a 4-2 win over Wilkinson County Christian Academy.

Huntington's Julie Moak defeated Jennifer Chaffin, 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 girls singles.

Emilee Johns blanked Carol Johnson, 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 girls singles.

Corbett and Hoover defeated Hanna Ashley and Caroline Walker, 6-3, 8-6.

Boothe and Ashmore posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bethany Fletcher and Taylor Littleton in No. 2 girls doubles.

Cal Wilkerson of WCCA defeated Gray, 6-4, 6-3.

George Davis and Justin Davis posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Dye and Olds.

Huntington and Trinity played to a 2-2 tie Monday.

Corbett and Hoover defeated Emory Smith and Madeline Iles, 6-2, 6-0.

Ashmore and Boothe posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mary Lee Williams and Brittany McCalip.

Trinity took all the boys matches.

Rudy Timm defeated Colby Gray, 6-3, 6-1. Gray fell to Mark Iles 8-0 in an extra match.

Tyler Jordan and Carter Smith outlasted Olds and Dye, 6-0, 4-6, 10-7.

In another extra match, R.J. Givens and Turner Lessley defeated Olds and Dye, 8-6.
