Code Red weather warning program on tap The Concordia Parish Police Jury is expected to help finance the parishwide Code Red weather warning system at its next meeting following a presentation of the program Monday night.
Capt. Frankie Carroll of the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office told jurors the program is an early telephone warning system that will automatically notify residents of threats of flash floods, tornadoes and severe thunderstorms when issued by the National Weather Service.
"When a weather warning is issued, within three seconds people in effective areas are contacted" with a pre-recorded alert message by telephone, said Carroll.
Carroll said Larry Chauvin and Jack Langston with the City of Vidalia "got the ball rolling on this program." Carroll said he visited governmental entities in the parish to outline the program and is working in conjunction with Morris White, Director of Concordia's Homeland Security Office, and 911 Director David Cobb.
Chauvin, Langston, Carroll, Cobb and White attended a meeting on the program hosted by Adams County Homeland Security Director Stan Owens on April 17.
Total cost of the parishwide program, which will also notify residents of other emergencies, is $15,000 annually. The Concordia Parish 911 District, Police Jury, Concordia Fire District No. 2, Clayton, Vidalia, Ridgecrest, Ferriday and Sheriff's Office are each expected to contribute $1,875 annually to support the program. |
