Goodman changes plea to guilty in girlfriend's murder

A Ferriday man, who killed his girlfriend and then hid her body for two days, pled guilty to manslaughter this morning (Wednesday) in Seventh Judicial District Court in Vidalia.

Judge Leo Boothe set sentencing for LaFarron D. Goodman, 505 Carolina Ave., Ferriday, for 9 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009. Goodman, 27, had originally entered a not guilty plea before changing his plea to guilty today.

Manslaughter carries a prison sentence of up to 40 years.

The victim in the case was 23-year-old Natasha Bates. According to investigative reports, Goodman shot Bates in the left temple on Feb. 26, 2008, in the home they shared at 505 Carolina Avenue.

Reports indicate that Goodman did not call police afterward, although he later confessed to shooting Bates with a .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol. He claimed the shooting was accidental.

Goodman reportedly put a plastic bag over Bates' head after killing her, put the body in a closet and later moved it to the laundry room. A relative of Goodman's found the body there and the Ferriday Police Department was called.

Goodman was reportedly standing on a nearby street corner when officers arrived around 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 28, 2008.

There were reports that Bates may have been leaving Ferriday for work elsewhere when the shooting occurred.
