Story Archives: Concordia airport fuel stop for coast-to-coast flight

Concordia airport fuel stop for coast-to-coast flight
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
In early June, Georgia-based pilots Matt Hansen and Jessica Scharle will attempt to set the initial speed record for a transcontinental flight of a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) and the Concordia Parish Airport has been chosen as one of three fuel stops on the westbound coast-to-coast, single day flight

Their purpose is to demonstrate that an LSA is a viable mode of transportation for long distance flying

"The Concordia Airport was chosen as a fuel stop because of our automated pump system, proximity of the system to the runway and the fact the airport was on intended route to San Diego," according to Carl Sayers of the Concordia Parish Airport Authority.

The flight will depart Cecil Field in Jacksonville, FL, and land at Gillespie Field in San Diego, CA, with stops at the Concordia Parish Airport in Vidalia, Skywest Inc. Airport in Midland, TX, and the Casa Grande Airport in Casa Grande, AZ.

Since the NAA (National Aeronautical Association) does not yet have a category which allows for the restrictions and limitations of an LSA, the crew is applying to the Guinness World Records for an official record.

Their Peregrine FA-04 is a factory-built Special-Light Sport Aircraft (SLSA). It carries 30 gallons of fuel, and with an average groundspeed of 110 knots, they are planning on three refueling stops along their 1813.5 nautical mile route from Cecil Field in Jacksonville, FL to Gillespie Field in San Diego, CA.

The route has been designed to avoid all restricted airspace and any area that would require flight above 10,000 ft msl for obstacle clearance.

Matt Hansen is a 23-year-old commercial pilot and flight instructor who has been very active in training people with disabilities to become Sport Pilots. Twenty-four-year-old Jessica Scharle is an Able Flight Scholarship recipient, and one of Hansen's former students who earned her Sport Pilot certificate in 2008.

As with all approved Light Sport Aircraft, the German designed Peregrine is a two-seat airplane.

The attempt will be conducted under the requirements of the Sport Pilot Rule, and will follow all restrictions and requirements under the rules for Light Sport Aircraft.

Under the Sport Pilot Rule, the attempt will be to set the record in a one day flight in VFR conditions, and within official daylight hours (17 hours and 20 minutes on June 11th).
