Brooking shines at Governor's Cup

Mississippi came up short in the Governor's Cup match last month in Little Rock, Ark., but Vidalia native Greg Brooking certainly did his share for the Magnolia State, posting the greatest margin of victory in the matches, beating John Vinson 8 &6 in the singles matches on May 16.

Arkansas won the 4th Governor's Cup22 1/2 to 13 1/2.

The matches were close after the four-ball matches.  Arkansas led 5 points to Mississippi's 4 points. With Mississippi leading many matches at the turn, Arkansas came back in the afternoon foursome matches to win 6 points to Mississippi's 2 points.

The alternate shot teams of Donny Holman/Duke Simmons and Brad Riles/Michael Dowst each won a point, with the team of Bob Rupnik/Felix Bertucci earning a point by tying their match against Ken Golden/John Vinson of Arkansas.

Mississippi trailed by 5 points after Friday's matches (Arkansas 11 to Mississippi 6 ).

Mississippi needed 12 points to win the cup. Arkansas only needed 6 points in the singles matches to tie and retain the cup. The singles matches were very close on Sunday, with six matches being decided 1up.

Brooking, who graduated from Cathedral High in 1975, had the great margin of victory of the matches, beating John Vinson 8 &6 in the singles matches on Saturday. Arkansas won the Governor's Cup 22 to Mississippi's 13 1/2.
