Story Archives: Vidalia, Ferriday compete at camps

Vidalia, Ferriday compete at camps
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vidalia High and Ferriday High's basketball team continued competition during the summer by attending camps.

One week after winning the Mississippi State Basketball Camp in Starkville, Vidalia High won three games at the Pineville Camp at Pineville High School.

Vidalia played three games, but was unable to play in the tournament because players had to return home for work

Vidalia beat Albany, 58-32 in its first game, followed by a win over Zwolle, 46-38.

The Vikings, who finished as Class 3A state runner-up last season, routed district foe Marksville, 54-28 in their final game.

"We were without Torrey Dixon, but other guys stepped up," said Vidalia coach Robert Sanders.

Vidalia will compete in the Natchitoches Tournament this weekend.

"We've got a big test in Natchitoches," Sanders said. "We'll be playing Bossier, Ruston, Many, West Monroe and Comeaux."

Sanders will be without guard Quartrell Thomas, who has to work this weekend.

"That will give somebody else an opportunity to step up," Sanders said.

Ferriday High's basketball team went 7-5 at the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Camp in Wesson.

"I'm happy with the way things went," said Ferriday coach Glen Henderson. "We took four eighth-graders who will be freshmen. The kids really enjoyed it and it gave them a chance to bond. I think it was really helpful. It gave us an idea of who we can count on."

Henderson said senior-to-be Gary Willis and incoming junior Markell Bell had good camps.

"It was a good experience for all the guys," Henderson said.

Ferriday High came within a basket of posting one of the biggest upsets in the first round of the basketball playoffs last season as the Trojans fell to Lakeside 55-54 in Sibley in a Class 2A first round game. Ferriday went 10-16 overall and 6-2 in District 2-2A.
