Story Archives: Photo -- The Sunken Road of Natchez

Photo -- The Sunken Road of Natchez
by Stanley Nelson - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Hidden still today in the backwoods of Natchez country are scenes like this — part of the sunken road which connected Natchez to New Orleans. This remarkably well-preserved section of the two-century-year-old road is located on private property along Ellis Cliffs south of Natchez. The Mississippi once hugged Ellis Cliffs before its channel moved to the west. The cliffs were known as the White Cliffs until the end of the 18th Century. (Photo by Stanley Nelson)
