Football practice resumes in parish
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The sounds of grunts and gasps filled locker rooms around the parish as football practice began this week.

Recent rains kept Huntington, Ferriday and Vidalia inside.

Mississippi Private School Assocation practices opened this week as the private schools open up a week before the public schools.

Public schools are allowed to go out in helmets and shorts for conditioning work.

Ferriday High is holding a summer camp on August 5 and will begin working out on Aug. 13 for the upcoming season.

"Holding a camp will enable us to install some things and get in some conditioning before we begin practice," said Ferriday coach Freddie Harrison.

Vidalia High players have spent all week in the weight room, as well.

Huntington coach Chad Harkins said he will begin two-a-days on Monday. Huntington starts school on Aug. 10.

"We've got a lot of new, young kids so we are having to go over a lot of basics such as plays and where to line up," Harkins said. "We're excited about getting started again and are looking forward to starting the season."

Huntington opens its season on August 21 at home against Central Private.

Vidalia is hosting its jamboree on Aug. 29, while Ferriday is hosting a jamboree on Aug. 28.

Vidalia hosts Block on September 4 in its season opener, while Ferriday High will host Natchez High on September 4.

It will be the first-ever meeting between Natchez and Ferriday. Ferriday played North Natchez back in the 1980s.
