Forty-five felony cases resolved in court in two weeks Forty-five felony cases were resolved in Seventh Judicial District Court over the past two weeks, Dist. Atty. Brad Burget said today (Wednesday).
"We moved on 21 felony cases on July 29 in Division B, and 24 on Wednesday and Friday of last week in Division A," said Burget.
He said resolution of the cases involved some pleas on lesser charges or dismissals. Some of the dismissals came after others pled guilty to crimes exonerating others.
"We're working with the judges and everyone within the system to be more efficient in the resolution of cases," said Burget. "It's a huge expense on taxpayers when matters are postponed or delayed on the court docket."
Burget said the DA's office handles more than 500 felony cases per year. He said most who were offered plea deals received jail sentences.
"Justice is being served," he said, adding that "pretrial detainees in our local system are expensive to the taxpayers."
He said once a case is resolved in the local system the local prisoner becomes a Department of Corrections' burden and expense.
At one point last week, three judges were at work at the courthouse in Vidalia hearing cases -- Judge Kathy Johnson of Division A in the court room, Judge Leo Boothe of Division B handling a civil matter in a conference room and retired Third Circuit Court of Appeal Judge Glenn Gremillion presiding over a juvenile matter in another area of the courthouse. |
