Governor to present checks in parish Thursday

Gov. Bobby Jindal will present checks for local projects during a visit to Concordia Parish on Thursday.

He will also meet with the Vidalia and Ferriday chambers of commerce and local parish officials at noon at the Bryant O Hammett/Vidalia Conference & Convention Center.

"Gov. Jindal made a commitment to work with north Louisiana concerning economic development and he is fulfilling that commitment," said Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland. "There are a number of various projects ongoing and he has worked with us on several in this area. We're proud to have him here."

Jindal presented a $2.8 million check for disaster recovery and hazard mitigation during a Town Hall meeting in Jonesville on Monday.

"He is also going to discuss job creation and job retention," Copeland said.

Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin said he will talk to Jindal about the water situation in Ferriday.

"I want to thank him for his help to this point and see what influence he has on the federal government and if he can intercede there," McGlothin said. "We're certainly not out of the woods yet."

Jindal said on his website recently that despite feeling some of the effects of the national economic downturn, Louisiana "is proving to be an exception to grim economic conditions elsewhere in the country."

Jindal said in a blog earlier this month that "one of the highlights of serving as your governor is that I have the opportunity to travel to communities throughout the state and meet the hardworking men and women that are Louisiana's backbone. Since taking office, it has been our top priority to make life better for each and every person in the state."
