Block focusing on defense After falling to eventual Class A state champion South Plaquemines in the quarterfinals, Block High head coach Benny Vault learned one thing.
"You have to win on defense," Vault said.
And that's what Vault is counting this season with nine starters returning on the defensive side.
"We should be very strong on the defensive side," Vault said. "We're counting on our defense to carry us this year. Our defensive line is our most dominant part."
The front defensive line of the Bears is certainly big and strong enough to carry a lot of things.
"Senior defensive end Shelby Ziegler stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 255 pounds and can power clean 305 pounds.
Junior Trey Vault stands 6-2, 205 and returns after an All-State of collecting 16 sacks.
Sophomore Denman Evans (6-3, 250).
Linebackers are senior Patrick Fisher (5-10, 185), junior Preston Bowman (5-9, 160), junior Antoine Bowie (6-0, 180) and senior Shannon Crumpton (6-0, 170).
Patrick is only 5-10, 185, but it is all muscle and he will hit you," Vault said.
While the defense is stout, the offense is no slouch.
Senior Curdarius Johnson returns at quarterback.
"He's a dual threat," Vault said. "He has good feet and has really been throwing the ball well."
Sophomore VaShawn Davis (5-8, 165) and senior Chris Collins (5-11, 160) will line up behind Johnson.
"VaShawn has good size and speed and Chris runs a 4.5 in the 40," Vault said.
Senior A.J. Calhoun (6-0, 190) will be at wide receiver.
"He runs a 4.5 in the 40 and powerlifts 550 pounds," Vault said.
Block hosts Ville Platte Friday in a scrimmage.
The Bears will compete against Tensas Parish High in the Vidalia Jamboree on August 29.
Block visits Vidalia on September 4 in its home opener.
Last year's game scheduled for Jonesville was cancelled because of Hurricane Gustav.
The Bears hosts Ferriday on September 11 before traveling to Jena. |
