Trojans to air it out more

Is "Air Freddie" coming to Melz Field?

Ferriday High head football coach Freddie Harrison has never been shy about throwing the football. But with Rodney Lawson (6-1, 180) returning for his senior season at quarterback and a very capable receiving corps, the Arena Football League quarterback is looking to air it out this season.

"We're either going to go three and out or score quick," Harrison said.

With the loss of only a handful of seniors and coaching his largest team number-wise since he arrived two years ago, Harrison is ready to put last year's 5-5 mark behind him.

"Our theme this year is 'Have you learned your lesson,'" Harrison said. "Our puppies are one year older. We took some butt-whippings last year, now I am anxious to see how they respond. Last year we didn't know how to finish a game. These kids are battle-tested."

While the Trojans will throw the ball more, Harrison is also counting on a big season fromsenior Bobby Madison (5-10, 190).

"Bobby came on early in his sophomore year and we're trying to gear our running game around him," Harrison said. "We're giving him every opportunity to be successful. He'll also see time at linebacker because we need him on the field."

Senior Nieco Amado (5-7, 170) will also see action in the backfield.

Wide receivers are junior DeVonta Scott, sophomore Richard Jefferson (5-9, 160) and junior Alfred Brown (6-2, 180) and senior Julies White (5-10, 185) will be in the slot.

Junior Gary Mayes and junior ZuRainie Thompson (6-1, 190) will also see time at wide receiver.

The offensive line consists of junior Jacari Williams (5-9, 220), junior Demetrious Conner (6-1, 220), sophomore Charles Chandler (6-1, 240) at center, junior Gerald Webster (6-2, 305) and junior Jerome Ventress (6-3, 260).

Sophomore Carl Ray Thompson (6-1, 205) will also see time on the line.

The defensive line consists of Chandler, Thompson and Webster.

Linebackers are White, Madison, junior Marques Lewis (5-9, 175) and Brown.

Defensive backs are Amado, Scott, Thompson and junior Chris Walker (5-8, 145).

Jarvis Brooks., Jefferson, Mayes.

Lewis will handle the kicking duties, while Madison will be called on to do the punting.

Ferriday will host Jackson High Friday at 5:45 p.m. in a scrimmage before competing in the Vidalia Jamboree on August 29.

The Trojans open their season on Sept 4 with a home game against first-time opponent Natchez High School.
