Football season marks beginning of new school year
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Public schools throughout Louisiana will kick off the 2009 football season this weekend.

Many private schools got under way last week.

We wish all high school football teams the best of luck, and we hope they all enjoy success in some form or fashion throughout the 2009 gridiron campaign.

Though elementary and secondary schools began classes as early as two weeks ago, the beginning of football season seems to signal the beginning of a new school year. At least that's the impression one could ascertain in reflecting upon public education in Louisiana where football is taken as seriously in some corners as church and family activities.

We are not criticizing the importance that many educators and many other people, including parents of school children, place on high school athletics.

We would caution them, though, to remember why children attend school in the first place. They attend to obtain an education. Participating in high school athletics, including football, should be secondary.

We realize that point is lost in the minds of some.

We also realize some people, including some parents of some school children, and some educators fail to remember that those young men and young women who participate in high school athletics are children regardless of their age. In other words, their minds have yet to develop.

With that thought in mind, let's enjoy another wonderful year of high school football in Louisiana, and let's do our best to encourage every young men and young woman to work as diligently as possible in the classroom.
