Story Archives: Harvest yields 'dismal' overall

Harvest yields 'dismal' overall

County Agent Glen Daniels said crop yields in Concordia on the average are poor this year due to adverse weather -- too dry during the early farming season and too wet during the later season.

"This has been an expensive crop year with low yields," said Daniels.

He provided the following update on crops:

Corn: Harvest is 65 percent complete. Average yield is 115 bushels per acre. A few farmers whose fields received adequate rain are harvesting 150 to 180 bushels per acre in spots, but yields are down 50 bushels per acre on the average compared to last year.

Cotton: Harvest at hand.

Rice: Yields have been good, an average of 185 bushels per acre.

Milo: Averaging 70 bushels per acre, the highest yields are 100 bushels per acre. "The dry weather took a toll on milo," said Daniels.

Soybeans: Harvest 35 percent complete. "It's dismal," said Daniels, noting that some of the crop is suffering from blight and green bean syndrome. "The better bean crop is harvesting in the mid-30s, but some farmers are harvesting only six to nine bushels per acre. We're way down -- about 20 bushels down -- from last year's average."
