Traditional 4A power Bastrop scored three times in the opening quarter on its way 32-12 win over Block Friday in Bastrop.

"We had three special teams mistakes that killed us," said Block coach Benny Vault. "They only had 39 rushing yards and we drove down the field twice without scoring. I was proud of the way we played. And they were very complimentary of our team after the game."

While Block scored the first points of the game after Renaldo Fox intercepted a pass and returned it to the Bastrop 34.

Eight plays later Preston Bowman outran the Bastrop defense to the left side of the end zone from five yards out the Bears lead 6-0.

The Bears squibbed a kick to the Rams right side. The balled was bobbled a couple of times and the Rams Xavier Robinson caught the ball and raced 64 yards for the touchdown.

In the third quarter, Cudarius Johnson had a 35 yard quarterback bootleg run to the Rams 20 and two plays later Johnson capped the drive with a bootleg sweep from 9 yards out.

"We fumbled the ball on the five-yard line on a kickoff and then we had a ball snapped over our punter's head on the 5-yard line," Vault said. "They didn't have a drive over 50 yards on us."

Vaught said it was a physical contest.

"We had so much ice on players on the bus that I told the bus driver he could turn off the air conditioner," Vault said. "But I walked by their training room and they had a few in there."

Block hosts Mangham Friday.

"They have a lot of speed," Vault said. "And they have a lot of athletes. They run the Notre Dame Box and they will send guys all over the place."

It's going to be a challenge for us."
