Block gets first official win
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Block High went into its game against Northwood Friday without a win after having to forfeit victories against Vidalia and Jena.

The Bears took their frustrations out on the Gators, running away with a 46-12 win in the District 3-1A opener.

"We needed something to smile about," said Block coach Benny Vault. "We knew they were a little weak and we played our ballgame, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on mistakes."

he Northwood Gators were exactly what the Block Bears needed Friday for an opening district game after nearly two weeks of turmoil, the forfeiture of two games, topped off by homecoming. The Gators, from Lena, limited to 17 dressed players were no match for the aggressive, bigger, and stronger, Bears who dressed 45 players and rolled 46-12.

The Bears (1-5, 1-0) host St. Mary's (6-0, 1-0) of Natchitoches at Henry G. Taliaferro Memorial Stadium in Jonesville at 7 p.m.

St. Mary's is in third place in the state's power rankings for Class A.

Former ULM and NFL quarterback Stan Humphries is an assistant coach at St. Mary;s.

"We're excited about the challenge," Vault said. "We set a goal for being district champions and this game is a big part of that."
