Ferriday gets district win over Mangham
Ferriday High opened District 2-2A play with a 34-12 win over Mangham Friday at Melz Field.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, Ferriday pulled away late in the second period and put a dagger in the Dragons' heart on a 34-yard picture perfect pass from Ronald Lawson to Alfred Brown with 33 seconds remaining in the first half.
"Ronald was right on time with that pass," said Ferriday coach Freddie Harrison. "That was a big play. It's always good to start district off on a positive note."
"We played pretty well for a while," said first-year Mangham coach Tommy Tharp. "They just outmanned us. They had 300-pound players on their front line going against our 180-pounders. But our kids played hard. They are the better team right now, but we feel like we will get better."
Mangham started the game on the Ferriday 47-yard line after the Trojans were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after running toward the Dragons coming onto the field.
Ferriday's attempted onsides kick from the 25-yard line was recovered by Mangham after two Ferriday players had a chance to recover it.
"We tried to catch them sleeping," Harrison said. "They were well-prepared and a well-coached football team."
The Dragons were forced to punt from the Ferriday 42-yard line.
Ferriday's first possession started at its 10-yard line where Davonta Scott ran 33 yards out of the Wildcat to the Trojan 43.
Ferriday was stopped on fourth-and-four at its 49.
Mangham fumbled the ball away on its next possession and the Trojans took over on their 48.
Ronald Lawson passed 36 yards to Alfred Brown to the Mangham 16. On the next play, Bobby Madison busted through the middle for an apparent score, but it was called back for holding.
Madison then repeated the same run, going 16 yards for the score. Madison ran in the conversion to give Ferriday an 8-0 lead with 6:52 remaining in the opening quarter.
After an exchange of punts, Mangham stopped Ferriday on fourth-and-three at the Ferriday 33 with 2:20 remaining in the first quarter.
Seth Parker passed six yards to Shaquille Ausberry, where a penalty moved the ball to the Trojan 1-yard line.
Five plays later, Montel Hardman scored from one yard out.
ZuRanie Thompson intercepted the 2-point conversion pass.
Nieco Amado returned the ensuing kickoff 30 yards to the Mangham 40.
Five carries by Madison put the ball in the end zone, with the final carry covering three yards.
The conversion failed leaving Ferriday with a 14-6 lead with 9:38 remaining in the first half.
Mangham went 70 yards in nine plays on its next possession with Parker hitting Edward Blount for a 24-yard TD.
The conversion failed and the Dragons trailed 14-12 with 4:15 remaining in the first half.
Ferriday's went 59-yards on its ensuing drive with Madison scoring from nine yards out with 1:44 remaining. Scott ran in the conversion to give the Trojans a 22-12 advantage.
An interception by Nieco Amado gave Ferriday possession at its 34-yard line late in the first half.
Madison run to the 41-yard line where a late hit and personal foul penalty moved the ball to the Dragon 34 with 33 seconds remaining.
"We thought that was a bum call, but we put ourselves in that position," Tharp said. "I'm not blaming the officials, because I feel the best team won that night."
Lawson then threw a perfect spiral to Brown that the receiver caught at the goal line for the score with 18 seconds remaining.
The conversion failed, leaving the Trojans with a 28-12 halftime lead.
Ferriday moved the ball to the Mangham 14-yard line on their first possession of the second half, but Blount intercepted a pass at the 10-yard line and brought it back to the Dragon 25.
The Dragons were forced to punt and Scott returned the kick 55 yards to the Mangham 15, but a penalty brought it back to the Ferriday 37.
The Dragons held and Mangham took over on its 30-yard line.
Runs by Ausberry and Hardman moved the ball to the Ferriday 20, but the Trojans held on fourth-and-10 at the 20.
Ferriday scored the final touchdown of the game on a 16-yard pass from Lawson to Scott with 10:04 remaining in the contest.
"We sputtered a little bit in the second half," Harrison said. "We got a little complacent. We stopped ourselves at times." |
