Perrilloux and the guys in stripes

Two years later and I am still reading about Ryan Perrilloux.

I really thought we were through with Perrilloux after the coming out party for Jordan Jefferson in LSU's 38-3 win over Georgia Tech.

Starting for the second time, Jefferson, the Offensive Most Outstanding Player, was nearly flawless in the first 30 minutes. 

After starting 11-of-12, he finished 16-of-25 passing for 142 yards including a 25-yard touchdown to tight end Richard Dickson that gave LSU a 28-3 lead late in the second quarter and sealed Georgia Tech's fate.

Meanwhile, Perrilloux is suspended for his first game at Jacksonville State this season for — are you ready for this - breaking a team rule.

So here we are at the end of October and I'm reading over the web site, Collegefootballnews.com and come across this from Russ Mitchell, predicting the LSU-Auburn game:

"The kid gloves are staying on for Jordan Jefferson. As such, this game will be closer than it should. If a fifth year senior Ryan Perrilloux were under center for the Tigers, this would be a massacre. As it is, it'll be a nail bitter, and the difference will be TOs; LSU leads the SEC in takeaways, and is tied for 9th in the nation. The Bayou Bengal defense will make just one more play than their Tiger cousins from the East, stopping AU on their final drive to preserve the home win."

Obviously, Perrilloux was not needed Saturday night as Jefferson hand things well in hand.

If fifth-year senior Ryan Perrilloux was still at LSU it would be a miracle he would be under center because trouble followed the guy around in Baton Rouge, and he was very inviting when it made an appearance. Life is much better at LSU for the Tigers and Perrilloux, even with the offensive struggles.

Perrilloux is no longer on the team in the same way Matt Flynn is no longer at LSU and Matt Mauck is no longer at LSU.

At some point it seems like Gary Crowton and Les Miles are no longer at LSU.

Even in the big win Saturday there was questionable play-calling. On the first play from scrimmage, Charles Scott follows fullback Dominque Allen for eight yards.

Then on second down, Russell Sheppard comes in without a fullback and runs the ball for negative yardage.

I know that's being picky, but with Alabama, Ole Miss and Arkansas coming up, those kind of plays and that kind of thinking can get you beat.

Obviously, Sheppard needs to be in the game. Hopefully they can pick his spots better and even let him throw the ball more.

I would also like to see Rueben Randle more involved. While Brandon LaFell and Terrance Tolliver have had a case of the dropsies lately, Randle has caught the few passes thrown his way, and a couple of them have been very impressive.

Otherwise, especially after last year, you have to be happy with 6-1 at this stage of the season.

It's just one of the crazier things in a crazy year for the SEC.

Hardly a peep came out of the SEC office when Riley Cooper pulled Chris Hawkins' jersey to aid in the only TD in the LSU-Florida game. This after the nation was all agasp when Georgia's A.J. Green was flagged for celebrating.

It really got crazy in the Florida-Arkansas games. A pass inteference call that wasn't. A pass interference that should have been. An unbelievably bad personal foul call. And I was told by a close friend who has close ties to the Arkansas program that Bobby Petrino showed his team clips that revealed Florida clearly missed one of their field goals that the refs said was good. According to an end zone camera angle, the kick was just wide. Supposedly, Petrino sent a copy of the field goal to the SEC.

Don't know if that added to the suspension or not.

And now Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen has a bone to pick with the guys in stripes.

OK, Lane Kiffin as well, but that's not as earth-shaking.

Mullen criticized a SEC replay official who worked his team's 29-19 loss to Florida Saturday night.

Mullen was angry about a fourth-quarter interception return for a touchdown by Florida's Dustin Doe. State thought it stripped the ball from Doe before he reached the end zone and that it should have possession because a Bulldog fell on the ball.

Though ESPN's replays appeared to show the ball coming free before the goal line, the replay official determined that there wasn't enough evidence to overturn the call on the field, which was that Florida scored.

"I don't know why we even have replay right now in the Southeastern Conference if they are not going to utilize it.," Mullen said. "That's twice that they've blown calls on the replay with our games resulting in big plays and I think that's unexcusable for that official. "I mean, I hope he is severely punished, if (he) ever works another SEC game again, because I think it is completely unacceptable."

Mullen compared that call to an earlier criticism of offsides on kickoffs. State was called for one in the fourth quarter Saturday, but Mullen said he thought Florida committed the same penalty "three or four" times.

I do appreciate the way the conference owned up to its mistakes. You now have to wonder how it will affect calls or non-calls for the remainder of the season. Don't expect as many holding or pass inteference calls.

And since the LSU-Georgia game I have seen much worse celebrating than what Green and Charles Scott did, only to be allowed by the officiating group.

There are some great SEC games remaining.

Let's hope that future talk centers more around those games than the guys in the stripes.
