Story Archives: Foster Campbell taking on AT&T on Internet issue

Foster Campbell taking on AT&T on Internet issue

Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell has never been one to bite his tongue, as a past state senator, gubernatorial candidate and now as head of the statewide regulatory agency in charge of public utilities and the oil industry for District 5, which includes Concordia Parish.

After taking on Entergy and the oil industry, Campbell is now ready to take on AT&T.

He announced at the Ferriday Rotary Club meeting Thursday that he will hold a public hearing in Concordia Parish before Thanksgiving, inviting AT&T officials to discuss why there is no high-speed Internet service to rural areas in the parish.

"When AT&T and Bellsouth merged, I was the only one who didn't vote for it," Campbell said. "They said they would provide high-speed, and we don't have it. That is no longer a luxury, it's a necessity."

In 2002, Campbell unseated popular incumbent Donald Lynn "Don" Owen, a former news anchorman for KSLA-TV in Shreveport.

"You are the main reason for that," Campbell told members of the Ferriday Rotary Club. "And I haven't forgotten that. I felt like I was running against Walter Cronkite in Bossier, Caddo and Webster Parish."
