Story Archives: Lady Trojans counting on speed

Lady Trojans counting on speed
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
For the first time in several years, Ferriday High Lady Trojan coach Lisa Abron will be without the twin towers.

Jasmine Upchurch (6-foot-2) is now playing at Northwestern State, while Ja'Lessia Davis (6-foot-3) is a member of the St. Augustine College in Raliegh, N.C. team.

"It's going to be kind of tough losing the kind of size," Abron said.

Abron will be counting more on junior guard Chanta Poole, who was the District 2-2A MVP as a sophomore, averaging 16.3 points a game.

"We're expecting Chanta to lead us in all kinds of ways," Abron said. "When I first started at Ferriday I had smaller clubs, so we are going back to what we did then, more full court pressure, fast-break offense and more high-powered. We had some success with that and I've been pleased with how we've looked so far in practices and scrimmages."

Ferriday finished 30-6 last season, losing to Christian Life in the quarterfinals.

Seniors on this year's team are Jasmine Butler, Kia Jefferson, Raven Lewis, Deonka Birdon, Afrika Alexander Andrea Johnson and Ta'Keira White.

Poole is joined in the junior class by T'Keyah Fletcher, Andrea Johnson, Takeira White and Keatrice Brown.

"We're playing in a lot of tournaments this year which we think will really help us," Abron said.
