Ferriday boys hope to surprise again Seven months ago, Ferriday High's boys came within a basket of posting one of the biggest upsets in the first round of the basketball playoffs last season as the Trojans fell to Lakeside 55-54 in Sibley in a Class 2A first round game.
Second-year Trojan head coach Glenn Henderson hopes to have more surprises in store for the 2009-10 season.
"We certainly want to build off of that," Henderson said. "I felt we were just starting to play better."
Ferriday went 10-16 overall and 6-2 in District 2-2A in Henderson's first year as head coach.
"We lost a lot of size with the graduation of Levier Pryor, who was a four-year starter, DeMarco Lewis and Carlton Robinson," Henderson said.
Gary Willis is the lone senior, while Markell Bell is the only returning junior with experience.
Two sophomores Henderson is counting on are Ted Gullage and Myron Duncan.
"We could actually end up playing more people this year because the talent level is pretty level," Henderson said. "I think it's going to be a lot like last season in that we will be much better later in the year. We're counting on a number of sophomores and have a good freshmen group. We also have some guys on the football team we will be counting on. We just have a lot of young guys who need experience."
Henderson is counting on the team coming together by the time district play starts.
"I think we'll be ready to compete by that time," he said. "We're counting on a lot of young guys." |
