Vidalia ends season at Jena
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vidalia High ends a disappointing season as the Vikings travel to Jena Friday.

The Vikings are 3-6 on the season.

"Every player remembers their final game, play by play," said Viking head coach Dee Faircloth, who prepped at Mangham High. "I remember my last game against Rayville more than any. I hope our seniors have enough pride to go out and want to make their last game one to remember."

The Vikings lost to Marksville, 30-14 in a mudbath last Friday in Marksville.

Seth Barlow had a 95-yard interception return for a touchdown just before halftime as the Vikings trailed 16-14 at intermission.

"That was huge, but we just didn't have enough of those kind of plays to stay with them," Fairlcoth said.

The Vikings were without seniors John Brixey, Quan Riley and Van Thompson and junior Dee Fleming because of injuries and sickness.

"Jamale (Davis) did a good job at running back," Faircloth said.

It's also been a disappointing season for Jena and its head coach Bernie Cooley, who played center for Faircloth back in the mid-19080s.

Jena's lone win this season was a forfeit win over Block. The Giants lost to Buckeye 36-35 two weeks ago.

Cooley dismissed 20 players from his Jena team during the spring and the Giants have been dressing out 31.

"The kids have played hard," Cooley said. "We have about eight freshmen and sophomores on the field at one time. Someone said for every sophomore you have playing, you can count a loss. Well, there are not enough games for the number of sophomores we play. We played well against Buckeye and played well for a half against Avoyelles last week, but had too many turnovers. Our guys know as young as we are, every game is a struggle."

Cooley said he knows Faircloth will have his team ready Friday.

"He always has his team ready to play," Cooley said. "Vidalia is going to come after us. A win Friday would be huge for us as far as confidence and momentum for the offseason. We just have to cut down on our mistakes."
